Studying in England, Wales & Northern Ireland

Student Finance England (SFE)

If you are ordinarily resident in England (or applying through equivalent bodies in Wales or Northern Ireland), your funding is managed through Student Finance England.

What Funding Is Available?

Tuition Fee Loan:

The government pays your tuition fees directly to your university:

  • Foundation Year: £5,760
  • Undergraduate Degree: £9,535 per year
Maintenance Loan:

Supports living costs such as rent, food, and travel. The amount depends on household income and where you live:

  • Approx. £6,500 – £18,000 per year
Childcare Grant:

Students with dependent children may be eligible for up to £10,000 per year, which does not need to be repaid.

How Undergraduate Payments Work

Funding is released in stages throughout the academic year.
Tuition Fee Loan (Paid to University):

  • 25% at the start of Term 1
  • 25% at the start of Term 2
  • 50% at the start of Term 3
Maintenance Loan (Paid to You):

  • 33% at enrolment / Term 1
  • 33% at the start of Term 2
  • 34% at the start of Term 3
Payments are released once your enrolment and attendance are confirmed.

Studying in Scotland

Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS)

If you are ordinarily resident in Scotland, your funding is managed by SAAS. Scottish funding often works differently — and in many cases can be more generous.

What SAAS Can Cover

Tuition Fees

SAAS pays full tuition fees directly to your university for eligible students, meaning you do not pay tuition out-of-pocket for most undergraduate courses.

Living Cost Loan & Bursary:

Students may receive a combination of:

  • A non-income assessed loan (baseline support)
  • An income-assessed bursary (for lower-income households)
Typical combined support ranges between £8,000 – £10,000+ per year, depending on circumstances.

Part-Time & Distance Learning Support:

Eligible students may apply for the Part-Time Fee Grant (PTFG), covering tuition costs for part-time study.

Postgraduate Funding (Scotland):

SAAS also provides funding for eligible postgraduate taught courses, including tuition and living-cost loans.

Courses With English & No English Test Required

Courses With No English Test Required:

Many UK universities offer Foundation Year pathways that do not require IELTS or formal English tests.

Popular options include:

  • Business & Tourism
  • Computing
  • Project Management
  • Psychology
Entry is usually assessed through:

  • An interview
  • A short written assessment

When an English Test Is Required:

Some courses particularly direct entry degrees or postgraduate programmes may require proof of English proficiency through:

  • IELTS
  • Duolingo
  • Oxford OPT
  • ELPT

Requirements vary by course and institution, and we help you choose the most suitable route.

Postgraduate (Master’s) Funding United Kingdom

Postgraduate (Master’s) Funding – UK:

Eligible students can apply for a Postgraduate Loan of up to £12,421, covering tuition and living costs.
The loan is paid directly to the student in three instalments:

  • 33% at course start
  • 33% after ~4 months
  • 34% after 7–8 months

There is no separate maintenance or childcare grant for postgraduate study.

Student Loan Repayments Explained:

You only start repaying your student loan once your income exceeds £27,295 per year.

  • Repay 9% of earnings above the threshold
  • No repayment if you earn below the threshold
  • Any remaining balance is written off after 40 years

Example:
If you earn £30,000 per year, your monthly repayment is around £20.
