Studying in England, Wales & Northern Ireland
Student Finance England (SFE)
If you are ordinarily resident in England (or applying through equivalent bodies in Wales or Northern Ireland), your funding is managed through Student Finance England.
What Funding Is Available?
The government pays your tuition fees directly to your university:
- Foundation Year: £5,760
- Undergraduate Degree: £9,535 per year
Supports living costs such as rent, food, and travel. The amount depends on household income and where you live:
- Approx. £6,500 – £18,000 per year
Students with dependent children may be eligible for up to £10,000 per year, which does not need to be repaid.

- 25% at the start of Term 1
- 25% at the start of Term 2
- 50% at the start of Term 3
- 33% at enrolment / Term 1
- 33% at the start of Term 2

Studying in Scotland
Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS)
If you are ordinarily resident in Scotland, your funding is managed by SAAS. Scottish funding often works differently — and in many cases can be more generous.
Living Cost Loan & Bursary:

- An income-assessed bursary (for lower-income households)

Postgraduate (Master’s) Funding United Kingdom
Postgraduate (Master’s) Funding – UK:
- 33% at course start
- 33% after ~4 months
- 34% after 7–8 months
There is no separate maintenance or childcare grant for postgraduate study.
Student Loan Repayments Explained:
- Repay 9% of earnings above the threshold
- No repayment if you earn below the threshold
- Any remaining balance is written off after 40 years
Example:
If you earn £30,000 per year, your monthly repayment is around £20.
